Tour includes the new greenhouse dedicated to growing winter kale for Wild Oats customers and a Q&A with organic farmer Lisa MacDougall.
Williamstown, MA, October 1, 2014 – Friday, October 10, 3 pm – all are invited to join Wild Oats Market on a tour of Mighty Food Farm, a certified organic farm in Pownal, Vermont that grows a variety of organic produce. Participants will tour Mighty Food’s fields and hoop houses with Lisa and her crew, and check out the hoop house that will be dedicated to growing fresh, organic kale for Wild Oats for the next three winters.
The tour begins at 3 pm and will last approximately 45 minutes. After the tour, we’ll meet in the Mighty Food CSA barn for cider, cider donuts, and Q&A with the outgoing owner/operator of Mighty Food Farm, Lisa MacDougall. All are welcome to join us (and a farm tour is fun for all ages). Meet at Mighty Food’s main driveway (next to the white farmhouse) at 549 Cedar Hill Road in Pownal.
Mighty Food Farm strives to use processes that enhance soil fertility and the farm’s natural balance. Lisa and her crew use a combination of organic methods, including composts, green manures, cover cropping, biological pest control, and crop rotation to improve their soil. Lisa will address the topic of organic soil management, as well as any other topics of interest to the group, during the tour.
The New Greenhouse at Mighty Food Farm
The 30 x 96 ft greenhouse that Mighty Food built this past July was done with the help of a low-interest loan from Wild Oats Market. For the next three winters, this greenhouse will be dedicated exclusively to supplying Wild Oats with winter kale, enabling the co-op to offer fresh, local kale to members and customers all year long. “Not only will this benefit our customers – it will also help a local farm by providing it with a steady income during a normally slow season,” said Wild Oats General Manager David Durfee. The greenhouse project is a pilot for a potentially larger farmer loan program. If the project proves successful, the co-op may consider working with other local suppliers in a similar way.
