The Greylock Independent was formed after our two northern Berkshire newspapers, The North Adams Transcript and The Advocate, both closed at the same time. We agree that the newer, speedier way to spread breaking news, is through the Internet. But we think we still need to take time to dig deeper and broader on local issues and trends, and to encourage our readers to share in this kind of slower reflection, in a public forum.
To foster a well informed and active community, we began publishing a monthly newsletter and a website in 2014. We take heart from Tocqueville’s comment, in 1835: “Newspapers are the only means, in a democracy, of persuading a great number of citizens simultaneously that, to protect their private interests, they have to join with others in the public interest.”
The Greylock Independent online is published by Citizen Media, Inc., a Massachusetts not-for-profit corporation founded in 1981 by the late Frank Patterson to foster a strong connection among citizens, media and public institutions. Contributions to Citizen Media, Inc. are tax-deductible under Section 501(c)3 of federal tax laws.
