September is just about the perfect month—not too hot, not too cold, still some summer left but the beautiful foliage is starting, the new school year brings our college campuses back to life. There’s so much to enjoy!
Theatre: If you think the season is over, you’re wrong! Hurry to catch the following, which all close September 3 or 4: “Or,” and “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” at Shakespeare & Company (which also has “Sotto Voce” running through September 11); “Tribes” and “Broadway Bounty Hunter” at Barrington Stage Company; “The Addams Family” at the Mac-Haydn; “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill” at the Dorset Theatre Festival; and “All My Sons” and “Murder for Two” at the Weston Playhouse. “American Son” returns to Barrington Stage from September 14-25” and A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters” runs September 22-October 2. The Theater Barn runs its big end-of-summer musical “The Wedding Singer” through September 4; and then presents “The Cocktail Hour” September 9-24. Oldcastle Theatre Company presents “The Consul, the Tramp and America’s Sweetheart” September 2-18. And the Berkshire Theatre Group ends their season with “The Bakelite Masterpiece,” a co-production with WAM Theatre, opening September 29 and running through October 23.
Musical Fun: Last chance to catch the new Berkshire Opera Festival’s production of “Madama Butterfly” at the Colonial Theatre on September 2. The FreshGrass Bluegrass Festival returns to MASS MoCA September 16-18. The final 2016 Tannery Pond Concert on the grounds of Mount Lebanon Shaker Village September 17. The Levitt AMP series of free concerts continue Sundays at 2 pm through October 16 in North Adams’ Colegrove Park. Bright Ideas Brewing hosts Upstate Rubdown September 5 from 4-7 pm and a free preview of the new Wilco album September 6 from 5-9 pm. Celtic Revival! ECMA nominees The SKY Family will be performing September 19 at 7 pm at the First Baptist Church of North Adams. And the Williams College Department of Music kicks off their season with four concerts scheduled this month.
All’s Fair…: This is the month for the BIG country fairs, including the granddaddy of them all, The Big E in West Springfield September 16-October 2. In New York state the Columbia County Fair in Chatham, and the Schaghticoke Fair run August 31-September 5. To our east the Blandford Fair and the Three County Fair in Northampton run September 2-5, while the Franklin County Fair in Greenfield is up from September 6-11.
Fall for Crafts: Two of our premiere regional historic sites hold fairs this month, the Deerfield Fall Craft Fair is September 17 & 18, and the Country Fair at Hancock Shaker Village, featuring their Harvest of Quilts, is September 24 & 25. The Northern Berkshire Gem & Mineral Club’s Annual Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show takes place at the Eagles Hall in North Adams on September 10 & 11. Up north Bennington hosts the Southern Vermont Garlic and Herb Festival September 3 & 4 at Camelot Village, and their QuiltFest September 17 & 18 at Mt. Anthony Union Middle School. The Practice Tee in Hunter Park is home to the Manchester VT Fall Art & Craft Festival September 30-October 2.
Bargains Galore: Is there a human being in North County whose wardrobe isn’t replete with bargains from the annual ABC Clothing Sale? This year’s sale is scheduled for 9 am-2 pm on Saturday, September 24 at the First Congregational Church of Williamstown. First Church and Saints Patrick and Raphael Parish will hold their annual Tag Sales on September 10. The North Adams Public Library has the Annual Book Sale September 23 from 9 am-4 pm at St. Elizabeth Parish Center.
